Black Stars score again!

One of the Flying Mission Zambia (FMZ) ministries which is popular in the community is soccer. For some while now, a group of young guys has been practising here on our ‘rough and ready’ pitch at Chilongolo, the FMZ Mission base near to Lusaka. When Roger and Sally Green went home to UK one time, they were able to collect football boots, team jerseys and a number of balls for the lads and so it was that FM United Black Stars soccer team was born! Now they regularly play games against other local teams and are generally quite successful!

soccer at chilongoloLeonard, our FM Zambian foreman at Chilongolo, is their coach. They benefit greatly from his wisdom as an older Christian man.He is very patient with them. For some he has become their father-figure.

Initially Sally Green ran special Bible studies for the lads, coupled with some training skills sessions - the knowledge of the latter derived from her past experience as a PE teacher! (Can you believe that?) Nowadays the lads attend the weekly Bible studies which are run for the FMZ workers and the community. They are learning from the older Christians and this seems to be proving helpful. Some have come to faith in Jesus Christ.

In March of this year, Junior FM Utd was formed! Lads from about 7 to 16 years of age come twice a week to learn ball skills and to play 'short games'. They are wonderfully enthusiastic! Sally was first of all helped by short-termer Simon, himself a keen player, to teach these lads the ball skills and disciplines that go with the game. When Simon returned to Germany in July, some of the older lads offered to give her a hand. It is a great way for them to encourage the younger lads and show appreciation to Flying Mission, as we work to bring fun and faith to the community here.
