First 'combined medivac' in Zambia
This month Flying Mission partnered with Mercy Flyers to carry out its first formal medical evacuation flight using our new air-ambulance configuration. Andy was the pilot for this hour and a half flight and Laura was the flight nurse. Dr Craig went along as supervisor/teacher for Laura.
The flights went very well and God provided great weather, ensuring a smooth flight for our patient.
The gentleman had been involved in a serious car accident the week before, sustaining a broken arm and leg, along with lung injuries. He needed to go to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka for surgery. Our new oxygen concentrator, installed by Flying Mission Zambia pilots John and Joel, was working perfectly, allowing us to give him 60% oxygen for the entire flight.
He was handed over to the Zesco Ambulance staff at Lusaka International Airport, who took him to the hospital.
Now we are eagerly looking for an ambulance of our own for this purpose since we hope this will be the first of many medivacs in the future.
